A microgrid is a small grid system that can be operated independently or in conjunction with the larger utility grid. A microgrid gives greater protection in case of an energy emergency and flexibility on renewable energy integration.
Distributed generation involves onsite power generation or district energy that could include solar, wind, biomass energy or geothermal heating/cooling. The use of distributed generation, particularly with battery backup, provides local energy protection in case of a disaster.
